If you wanted to play it on high, you would have wanted either an Nvidia FX 5900 series / ATI Radeon 9600 series or higher. Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 definitely pushed people to upgrade their PCs at the time. ATI/Radeon was also kicking Nvidia's ass at this time in regards to performance as well.
It really makes Half Life 2 pop to life like no other. To say Half Life 2 is timeless doesn't even do it justice. It's just beyond any kind of shooter i've ever played. Even some of the biggest budget Triple A shooters i've played don't compare to the quality of detail in Half Life 2. I can't sing the technical praises if this game enough.
