nikon 70 200 f4 vs f2 8
Earlier this year my 80-200 f2.8 broke (well, I broke it by dropping on concrete). Nikon's 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II was too expensive, could not find used VR I in good condition so I ended up buying 70-200 2.8 stabilized sigma. Sigma turned out to be a very nice lens with faster and more accurate autofocus on my D300 and additional benefit of good
Captured with the 70-200mm f/4 lens. As a landscape photographer, it’s rare that you need f/2.8, especially for the type of images I tend to capture. It’s more important for me to save weight (1540 gm/3.2 lbs versus 850 gm/1.9 lbs) since my backpack gets quite heavy when carrying all my lenses and cameras, a tripod, and other accessories. At 100mm the 100-400 is f/4.5 vs f/2.8 so at lower focal lengths, the 70-200 wins, but when you extend out to 400mm you will be getting the equivalent DOF. Let’s be clear, I’m not proposing the 100-400 as a shallow DOF portrait lens, just saying under the right conditions you could achieve similar outcomes.The 70-200 mm 2.8 will give me an professional grade lens in a range that I use very often. With the TC, it will also give me the extended range that I sorely miss for the occasional birding / fleet week / wildlife shooting / super moon opportunity. I am very tempted to go with this option.
